Accessibility Information

Ensuring that KC Zine Con is an accessible event is our priority. For KCZC #6 – our first-ever Virtual convention, we worked hard to ensure our website is accessible to everyone; steps we took to increase accessibility on our site included: making text high-contrast, and adding ALT-text to images. For our livestreamed panels, we will have auto-generated captions at the time of the livestream, and we will be saving the panel videos and adding transcribed captioning to them in the days after the festival. Some of the workshops/discussions will also be recorded and captioned.

The information below applies to KCZC #5’s in-person festival location, but will be updated with accessibility information about our next in-person festival once the venue and date are announced.

KC Zine Con is wheelchair accessible. Aisles between exhibitor rows are wide enough for mobility devices to navigate. There are ADA Accessible parking spaces available at the Student Success Center that serve Pierson Auditorium, as well as Swinney Recreation Center. The Student Success Center/Pierson Auditorium is wheelchair accessible via the north/east entrance. A map of accessible parking spaces and entrances can be downloaded here:

There are no stairs within Pierson Auditorium and it is on flat ground. There are stairs and ramps leading to Pierson from the parking lot. If you would like to access Level 1 of the Student Success Center (for the cafeteria, ATM, vending machines or lactation room), access is available via stairs and elevators.

KC Zine Con is accessible by public transit. If you are coming from the North (South of the River), take the 55 to the 51st/Cherry St. stop, then head West towards the library. The Auditorium will be on your left, just South of the library. If you are coming from the North (North of the River), we recommend taking the 201, then transfer to the 55 at 3rd and Grand. If you are coming from the South, take the Main Street Max to the Brookside/51st Street Stop, then walk East across campus. The Auditorium is an approximately 10-minute walk from this stop.

KC Zine Con is accessible by bicycle: a bike rack is located directly outside the south entrance lobby (where Zine Con tabler-check in is). There is also a rack on the west side of the south entrance.

KC Zine Con will have free parking for cars and bicycles the day of the event.

Bathrooms with and without urinals are located outside the South Entrance, in the lobby. An additional gender-neutral bathroom is located on Level 1 of the Student Success Center, around the corner from the stairs and elevators.

Breastfeeding parents may utilize any space in the building, however, a private lactation room is located on Level 1, Room 114, next to the gender-neutral bathroom.

KC Zine Con is a scent-aware, smoke-free space. While we cannot guarantee a scent-free space due to the size of the event, we ask that participants please refrain from wearing fragrances the day of the event to make our space more accessible for those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. No vaping or smoking is allowed inside KC Zine Con or on the UMKC campus.

A quiet room will be available to those who need it the day of the event.

There will be DJs performing live music sets during the fest. We have set a strict volume limit in order to make the festival more accessible to those with auditory conditions.

Service Animals are welcome in the exhibition hall. Pets that are not service animals are not allowed.

If you are not tabling and need a place to sit down and rest, there will be chairs located next to the entrance and in the quiet room. If you need a bag, we will have free recycled plastic bags at the welcome table.
